Dar es Salaam Airport Guide
Dar es Salaam Airport or Julius Nyerere International airport using airport code DAR is the biggest airport servicing Tanzania. It accommodates 6,100 passengers per hour and over 8 million passengers per year. It has two runways and two terminals that serve both domestic and international flights. Today, the airport is undergoing massive transformation, as it targets to be the main aviation hub for central and eastern Africa.
Shopping, Dining and Entertainment
There are limited choices when it comes to dining and shopping in the airport. It has a duty free shop as well as a few small retail outlets and souvenir shops, which are all located in the terminals. A pharmacy is also available in the area. As of now, the airport has only three restaurants, two of which is in the departure area and one is in the public area. For entertainment, huge screens in the waiting are available to entertain guests and passengers while waiting for their flight. Visitors may also buy magazines and newspapers at the news stands.
Arrival and Departure
Arriving passengers at the Dar es Salaam Airport are subjected to passenger screening. Passengers are required to present their Visa, valid IDs, passport and other travel documents for immigration clearance. After which, customs will check the baggage for prohibited and restricted items. Foreign visitors should have a pre-approved visa before entering the country.
Departing passengers are also subjected to a series of security checks. Carry-on baggage screening is also done and to avoid delays, do not bring liquids more than 100 ml or gels in the carry-on baggage, as it will be confiscated. Drugs, sharp objects, flammable and poisonous substances are also prohibited in the airport. Check-in counters are open two to three hours prior to departure time, but check with your airlines first.
