Timor Leste Airport Guide

Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport

The President Nicolau Lobato International Airport is also known as the Comoro International Airport. Located in the capital of East Timor, in Dili, the airport is named after Nicolau dos Reis Lobato, who is the country's national hero  and former Prime Minister in the 70's who was killed fighting for his country.

The airport is a public civilian airport  and operated by the East Timor Civil Aviation Division. It has one asphalt runway, which is 1,849 meters long.

There are several airlines that operate at the airport, which are : AirNorth, with flights to Darwin; Air Timor operated by SilkAir, with flights to Singapore; Merpati, with daily flights to Denpaiar, Jakarta – Soekarno Hatta; and Sriwijaya Air with flights to Renpasar and Jakarta – Soekarno Hatta.

The airport did not originally have the capacity to handle large aircrafts but in 2008, was able to handle a Boeing 757 by the EuroAtlantic Airways, with a direct flight from Lisbon, which carried soldiers of the Guarda Nacional Republicana.

During the East Timor Crisis in 2006, the airport was taken under control by the Australian Defense Force.

Serving as the hub of Air Timor Airlines, the President Nicolau Lobato International Airport serves flights to Singapore, three times a week.

The airport is pretty small so it only has a few facilities to meet the needs of the passengers. Currently, a 25-year master plan is underway, with the plans of massive renovation  and reconstructions to the airport's complex. There is very limited for activities that involve non-airline businesses such as retail space inside the terminal. The renovations  and expansions are intended to meet the growing needs of Dili's residents, as well as tourists  and visitors who wish to travel  and visit the city. The expansion is also intended to help boost the city's tourism sector.

There are only a few flights at the airport, so lines are small, making it convenient for passengers during check-in, for fast processing. There is free WiFi for waiting passengers, which has a very strong connection. There are no retail  and food shops inside the terminal but a Duty Free Shop is available.

Once you check in  and pass through immigration, there are no places to eat or buy food  and drinks, so after going through this process, you can go back outside the terminal  and to the café located just outside.

There are also no hotels close to the airport's vicinity but the Katua's Hotel is located in the same avenue of the airport, which is a convenient place to stay in if you want to stay in close proximity to the airport.

The best way to get to  and from the city is by private car. If you book a tour with a travel agency, it’s best that you arrange for someone to pick you up at the airport. Taxis are available but may be few so it's best that you order one once you arrive, or even before you get take your flight to the airport. Buses are available in the highway, but you have to walk a short distance to get to this public mode of transportation.
