Paris is on almost everyone’s list of places they want to see in their lifetime.  The city is soaked in beautiful history in the form of museums, palaces, gardens, and the famous Eiffel Tower.

As enjoyable as spending your days shopping and enjoying the food from cafes may sound (a coffee and delicious French pastry is unforgettable), you can’t pass up the opportunity to see at least some of the famous sites of Paris.  How can you go all the way there and not experience these for yourself?  Here is a list of five attractions that are considered to be must see places in Paris.

The Eiffel Tower

How can this landmark not be at the top of the list?  One of the most recognizable structures in the world, a trip to Paris is not complete without an up close view and a self portrait in front of the tower.  A tour to the top provides a gorgeous panorama of Paris.  A long line is typical, but all who go say it is worth the wait. At night the tower sparkles with lights, which lends to the romance of the city.

The Louvre

The Louvre, one of the largest palaces on earth, is an architectural masterpiece containing some of the most exquisite artifacts in the world.  Browsing through this massive museum can easily occupy an entire day.  This would be a great choice for that rainy day that always seems to show up on your trip.  Even if you are not a museum lover, an up close view of one of the most famous paintings in the world, the Mona Lisa, makes this attraction a must see.

The Catacombs

An unusual and slightly eerie experience, a tour of the catacombs gives you a glimpse into the dark belly of the city. For many years Parisians used this as burial grounds.  A walking tour takes you below the city into narrow rooms and corridors which are lined with bones and skulls of over 6 million people.  This is a very popular tour; therefore there is usually a wait. A book from an authentic, Parisian bookstore will not only make a great souvenir, but help pass the time while waiting in line at these popular sites.

Ok, this is more of a must do than a must see, but a true European experience should include wine!  France is famous for producing some of the most desired wines in the world.  This wine tasting provides a fun and educational experience that can be enjoyed by novice wine tasters as well as the experienced. Purchase your favorite for an evening wine and cheese snack while viewing the beautifully lit Eiffel Tower from a nearby park bench.

Arc De Triomphe

This famous monument is dedicated to French veterans and their victories.  Along with ornate carvings, this site offers a bird’s eye view from the top if you choose to make the climb.  The lines are not as long as the ones at the Eiffel Tower, so this is an alternative way to see the city from above if you just don’t have time to wait.  The monument is built in the middle of a roundabout and you can see the busy avenues fanning out into the neighborhoods. This is a beautiful site when the sun goes down and the cars and street lights illuminate the city.

These five places will help you to experience Paris from above, below, and everywhere in between. Don’t forget the camera!  You’ll want proof you have “been there, done that”.
