Accra Airport Guide

Kotoka International Airport

The Kotoka International Airport is located in Accra, Ghana. Operated by Ghana Airports Company, the airport is the country's premier international airport. With over 2 million passengers handled in 2012, the airport is the biggest in the country and serves as the hub for domestic airlines Africa World Airlines, Starbow Airlines, fly540 and Antrak Air.

The airport is used for civilian purposes but the Accra Air Force also shares some of the facilities. Situated in 651 hectares of land and located 10 km from the city centre of Accra, the airport has one asphalt runway, which is 3,403 meters long.

The airport was originally named Ghana International Airport, but was later renamed in honor of General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka who was killed in a coup attempt at the forecourt of the airport. He was also a ruling member of the National Liberation Council.

The airport's current mission is to provide world class facilities and services to meet the demands of their valued passengers and also of that of their stakeholders.

There are two passenger terminals at the airport. Terminal 1 is used for domestic and regional flights, while Terminal 2 is used for international and long haul destinations. Both terminals are separated but are connected by a walkway.

The terminals have the necessary facilities that make it very convenient for passengers. The airport's VVIP terminal is used by the government and military, with a separate entrance and exit, providing privacy and discretion for all the passengers who use it. Another lounge, the State Protocol Lounge is used for senior government officials and diplomats.

There were a few renovations and expansions in 2011 that gave the airport a bigger area to accommodate its growing number of patrons. Ten new check-in kiosks were built at the departure hall of Terminal 2, as well as other improvements.

The airport clinic provides medical services such as first aid and even for travel immunization. It is located only 500 meters from the terminal building.

WiFi is available for free all throughout the airport, as well as mobile phone and gadgets' charging services. Currently, a business centre is in the works, which will provide passengers all the necessary facilities and equipment to be productive during their time at the airport.

There are no hotels inside the airport but the Airport View Hotel is located just 2 minutes away from the airport complex, located at the foot of the intersection road right outside the airport. If you want a hotel that's near the airport and the city, the African Regent Hotel is a good choice.

The best way to get to and from the airport is by private car. Public transport is also available such as buses but they will take longer to get to the city. Car rental services and hotel shuttle buses are also good options to get to the city centre of Accra.

Accra Airport Guide

The Accra Airport, more officially known as the Kotoka International Airport, is the main aviation hub of the West African region. It is Ghana’s premier international airport and is large enough to accommodate even larger aircrafts such as the Boeing 747-8. There are actually numerous airports in the country of Ghana, ranging from domestic to international ones, but the Kotoka International Airport or the KIA still remains to be one of the most widely used in the area.

Like most airports, the KIA is located just outside of the city. A private car can take passengers from the airport to the city proper in about thirty minutes, while the option of a public transportation system would most probably have a longer transfer time.  Foreign tourists will not have a hard time finding transfer services from the airport to their local destination because of the presence of airport taxi services and airport rental car agencies.

The Accra Airport in Ghana is a place where guests can find more than the basic necessities. The airport houses its own duty-free shops, some restaurants and other dining options, a foreign currency exchange service provider, and medical facilities to aid in any emergency. As for those who do not yet have any concrete plans for their stay, there are available services in the airport that offer options for hotel and accommodations as well as choices for activities and tours.

Being the most prominent airport in the country, the Kotoka International Airport is actually made up of two passenger terminals. Simply referred to as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, these areas serve different purposes for the airport and its guests. The first airport is used mainly for domestic and regional flights, while the second terminal is where international flights depart from. There is an internal walkway that connects the two terminals so that they are easily accessible for the guests. It is also important to note that the international terminal is the one that houses most of the duty-free shops and restaurants as well as two Business class lounges. Accra Airport also has a separate VIP terminal which is used for diplomatic and military purposes.
