Alicante Airport Guide

Alicante Airport is a public airport owned by Aena and is located in El Altet-Torellano. Geographically, this airport is settled nine kilometres southwest of Alicante and ten kilometres east of Elche. This airport started its operation in May of 1967 under the name El Altet Airport with Aviaco’s Convair Metropolitan as its commercial flight. This is also considered the main airport for one province and one region in Spain, Alicante and Murcia, respectively. The top three airline companies that are serviced by this airport are Ryanair, EasyJet and Iberia.  

Alicante Airportused to operate with two terminals named as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1 managed 38 check-in desks and one desk for special baggage. The desks are numbered one to thirty-eight while the special baggage’s desk is numbered 39. It was also equipped with eleven gates, five of which are supplied with air bridges. Terminal 2, on the other hand has fourteen check-in desks and two baggage carousel. The check-in desks are numbered 51 to 64. In present time, both terminals are closed because of renovations. Both are expected to open soon with Terminal 1 connecting to the new terminal and with Terminal 2 allocated to private and small charter planes.

The airport is currently operating on a new terminal which opened last March 2011. The total area of this terminal measures 333,500 square meters. This is estimated to measure six times the size of terminals 1 and 2 combined. The features of this airport include forty gates, fifteen air bridges, sixteen baggage reclaim carousels and 96 check-in desks.   

Alicante Airport now ranks sixth in the category of busiest airports in Spain based mainly on the number of passengers that pass through this landing field. During the seventies, the passengers arriving in the airport reached one million. And just last year, almost 10 million passengers were accommodated by the airport. Aside from the passengers, flights and cargos operating in this airport also added to it being included in the fifty busiest airports in Europe. Just last year, at most 76,000 flights landed into the airports. 3,000 tons of cargos were also serviced through this airport.
