Ashgabat International Airport
The Ashgabat International Airport, otherwise known as the Saparmurat Turkmenbashy International Airport, is one of only 2 international airports in Turkmenistan. Located 10km north of the capital city of Ashgabat, the airport has a main runway, which is 3,700 meters in length.
The airport has two other runways, one asphalt and the other concrete, aside from the main concrete runway. It is a public airport used for civilian purposes and is operated by Turkmenistan Airlines.
Opened in 1994, the Ashgabat International Airport was named after the country's first ever president, Saparmyrat Niyazov. The terminal building has a capacity of handling 1600 passengers per hour.
There are several airlines that operate at the Ashgabat International Airport and these are Belavia, China Southern Airlines, FlyDubai, Lufthansa, S7 Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Turkmenistan Airlines and a few others for chartered flights. Destinations include both domestic and international cities, such as Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Minsk, Frankfurt, Dubai, Moscow – Domodedovo, St. Petersburg, London, Kiev, Paris and many others.
Open 24/7, the airport is fully equipped with all the necessary facilities that passengers need to make staying and waiting at the terminal a convenient and comfortable one.
In 2012, a new airport terminal began construction, with an estimated finished date in 2015, which will help boost the city's tourism, with its target handling capacity of 14 million passengers a year. By March of 2014, passengers will have to use a temporary terminal, with the handling capacity of 1,250 passengers per hour. Once the new terminal is completed and opened, this temporary terminal will be used exclusively for business and private charter flights.
The current terminal has a customs office, airline offices, border control and several other facilities. A Business Club is available for those who want to stay in a more comfortable space before boarding. VIP rooms are also provided, offering more comfortable seating, food and drinks, TV, periodicals, separate and private check in and boarding, as well as assistance for baggage and a private transportation to head to the aircraft.
There are also several shops and retail stores for those who need to buy a few things such as gifts and souvenirs. Fast food outlets are also available for food-to-go or quick meals and snacks before and after a flight. ATMs and currency exchange services can be found in the airport, as well.
The airport is also equipped with a medical clinic for first aid emergency needs and for evaluation of any health concerns, such as pregnant women who need to be assessed before taking their flights.
Since the city center is only 10 km away, modes of transportation are easily accessible at the airport. There are taxis and car rental services available to order at the airport, as well as public transportation for more affordable means of getting to and from the city.
