Pakse (Champasak) Airport Guide
Champasak is a province in Southern Laos that is known for being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because of this reputation, people from all over the world are interested in seeing this place firsthand. But what is the best way to visit this province? Of course, the best way would be to arrive by plane. What is the best Champasak airport out there? The answer to that question is none other than the Pakse International Airport.
This airport is known to be one of the few international airports in Laos. Located at Pakse, the capital of the Champasak province, this airport is steadily developing as of the moment. If you will consider the logistical elements of this province, placing the airport at Pakse makes a lot of sense. Known as the transportation hub of the province, it serves as a terminal/stop for buses, minivans, and boats traveling off Mekong River. Getting deep into the heart of Champasak province using any of these transportation methods should not be much of a problem, even if you’re just fresh from the airport.
Traditionally, this Champasak airport is operated by the Military of Laos. Right now, it is still receiving different improvements, with the goal of making this airport the aviation hub for the entire southern part of this country. As it currently stands, the second phase of development for this airport is currently underway, and is serving flights to and from major Asian cities such as Vientiane, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, and Siem Reap.
The first phase of airport development, which was completed in 2008, brought about these improvements: the development of a 2,400-meter long runway, resurfacing for better landing of jet aircraft, and increasing the overall accommodating capacity of the airport itself. As for the second phase of development, these include the further extension of the runway, installation of runway lights, parking improvements, and the expansion of the control tower.
As it continues to improve, the Pakse International Airport is becoming a very important transportation hub not just for Champasak, but for the entire country of Laos. As this Champasak airport improves, so will the experience of people traveling to and from this prominent historic site.
