Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup
Considered as the busiest airport in Scandinavia, the Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup was formerly known as Kastrup Airport due to its location in the small town of Kastrup. Located 8 kilometers from the city centre of Copenhagen, the airport is the main international airport of several regions such as the city of Copenhagen, the entire Zealand, a large part of Southern Sweden and the Oressund region. It is also the main international airport that services the major tourist destination town of Silkeborg, which can be reached through car from the airport in a 3 hour drive.
The largest airport in the Nordic countries, the Copenhagen airport is also one of the oldest international airports in the whole of Europe. Its current owner is Kobenhavns Lufthavn and handles over 21 million passengers every year, with only a few domestic passengers that cover about 2 million each year.
There are several local and international airlines that use the airport to bring its passengers to and from domestic and international destinations all over the world. Though the airport has a big number of airlines, it is the hub of a few airlines such as the Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia, the Norwegian Air Shuttle and Scandinavia Airlines.
The Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup has a long and rich history that started in 1925, when it was open for service. It had a grass runway at that time, similar to airports that were built around the world. By the year 1932, the airport had 6000 take offs and landings that year. Due to the demand of flights, a passenger terminal was built in 1939. It was the year 1941 when its runway was reconstructed to hard surface. By the year 1956, the airport was able to handle about 1 million passengers. Several improvements and renovations were made over the years, with a Hilton hotel built in 2001 and reaching over 20 million passengers by 2006. In 2013, the Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup was honored with the Best Airport in the World Award at the World Route Conference, Las Vegas.
Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup has all the facilities and amenities one would expect from a major international airport. The 5-star Hilton Hotel is conveniently located just a few meters from the main terminal building where you can reach the building through a covered tunnel right from the check in or arrival hall.
There are several banks, ATM machines and currency exchange units located in several areas of the terminal. The airport is also family friendly as it has areas for Baby Changing and a Family Area that’s open 24/7, where children can play, eat and sleep and an adult seating area is also provided.
There are also several VIP Lounges and the new CPH Apartment that has all the amenities of a luxury apartment where business people can wait for their flight.
Getting to and from the airport is never a problem since there are trains, buses, taxis and car rentals that are easily accessed by passengers.
