Of course, eager travelers also have another fun-filled adventure ahead of them: visiting Costa Rica’s rural towns. While such an activity might sound rather mundane, it should be pointed out that Costa Rica’s rural areas are not just boring places devoid of modern amenities but are locales that boast astounding sightseeing opportunities.

Juan Santamaria International Airport is Costa Rica’s primary airport, having world-class features such as VIP lounges and multiple jet bridges. The airport boasts superb transportation-related convenience as well, as it is connected to several important bus routes. Alternatively, those who prefer a more private means of traveling would be pleased to know that booking an airport transfer is indeed simple! However, despite being a popular tourist destination, most of Costa Rica’s residents are not fluent in English.

Costa Rica Airport Guide

The main Costa Rica airport is the Juan Santamaria International Airport located in San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital. The airport is 20 kilometers away from the city’s downtown. It is the hub for the Avianca and Sansa Airlines. It is the busiest airport in Costa Rica with over four million passengers every year. All international flights to Costa Rica land on this airport, which should not be a problem to passengers as it has basic and added facilities and services.

Airlines like Air Canada, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, United, Iberia, US Airways and JetBlue have regular flights arriving and departing from this Costa Rica airport.

The main mode of ground transportation to and from the airport is buses and taxis. One can choose from public and private/express buses. The fare in a public bus is around 500 colones while taxi trips can cost about US$20 per 30-minute trip. It takes about 45 minutes to travel to the city center, which is about 16 kilometers away from the airport.

There are also telephones at the airport, which is convenient in case there are changes in the flight schedule and you need to call someone. However, note that the international calls are expensive. A call to the US cost $85. Money is not difficult in Costa Rica. The ATMs accept international cards. There are also cafes and fast food outlets at the airport. Most of them are the popular ones in the United States.

There are waiting rooms at the first level of the main international Costa Rica airport. There are VIP rooms, too. The VIP lounge is available only to passengers of some airlines, employees of travel companies, clients of particular banks, etc. The diplomatic passengers can also access the to the reception room.

The government requires a fee of US$ 28 as a departure fee. It can be paid in dollars or colones; by cash or through a credit card. You can also pay it in advance at the local banks or at your hotel. Note that there is a security check and another check prior to boarding the plane. Some items like umbrellas need to be checked if there are any prohibited item.
