The ancient city of Fes
Fes is one of the ancient walled cities in Morocco and it’s often compared to the walled city of Jerusalem and it’s also the second biggest city in the region. In medieval times, Fes was once the capital of Morocco and the center of high Islamic civilization and it is the oldest preserved city in the entire Arab nation. The city is a car free zone and it is believed to be the largest care-free zone in the world and the only way to transport goods into the city is by motorbikes, carriages and donkeys.
The oldest and still functioning university can also be found here in the city which is the University of Al-Karaouine and it has been teaching student since 859 AD. As of 2010 the estimated population of the city had reached1 million.
Things to do
This city is very old and navigating its labyrinthine streets can be a challenge; but it’s well worth it if you manage it. Around the city walls there are beautiful structures and buildings and trip to Medina is the probably the first thing you should do. Around the old city, you can see some of the mosques and old universities such as the religious College Of Bou Inania Madersa. The tomb of Moulay Idriss II is one of the main sites for tourist but sadly you can't enter the tomb; however, you can still view it outside its doors.
The marketplace is also a good place to be when looking for something exotic either is food or items. The city is known to be the handicraft center of Morocco and some are in good value such as leather works, brass, copper, handcraft pots and some musical instruments. For food, one can go to the streets near the Bab Boujeloud which is filled with lots of treats. There are a lot of restaurants here but most of them are very expensive.
There many ways to enter Fes and the airplane is the first ride into the city. There are about five airliners that can bring you into the city and they are Royal Air Maro, Jet4You, Ryanair, Transavia and Easy Jet. The airport is about 15km away from the city and you can choose to take the bus or shuttle which is the preferred way. Another way is by train but there will be frequent stop over before reaching your station and from there you can take a taxi to bring you to your hotel.
Fes Airport Guide
Fes Airport can be found about 10 kilometers outside of Fes. There is only a taxi service from the airport because there are no existing train and bus services available. Prior to riding a taxi cab, travelers are advised to ask the driver about the fares going to their destination. Fes is the oldest city in Morocco and is considered a colonial city. It has two areas known as the old Fes and the new Fes. It has excellent locations where conventional ceramics and pottery making are found. Visitors are often excited about observing the talent of designers and makers of these pieces.
Nearby Fes Airport are nice dining locations with lots of traditionally prepared food alongside European influenced eating places. It has a temperate kind of climate so a lot of restaurants provide outdoor tables within picturesque gardens making the experience unique and memorable. Visitors are fond of shopping in this destination where there are numerous stall outlets. Customers are expected to get bargained prices for their chosen items. Majority of sellers offer discounted prices if the customers are willing to purchase more than just one item. These items go for lower bargain prices with every additional product offered for purchase.
Being an imperial city, Fes has been known to be an open museum that exhibits numerous works of art by masterful creators since the early periods. They have mosques, palaces with ancient works of art, medersas, and other architectural structures and places tourists should not miss out. The most magnificent mosque is situated in the middle of the city. The medersas demonstrate the scholarly, innovative, and scientific history of the city.
After stepping out from the Fes Airport, visitors can observe the locals’ usual surroundings of high-level pleasures and luxuries such as nice homes, delicate cuisine, well-designed clothing, and fine amalgamation of colors, ancient rituals for beautification, faint perfumes, and captivating music. With the many bath houses, thermal springs, spas and other places the culture of beauty and wellness seem apparent.
