The Karup Airport is the main airport that serves the municipality of Karup, Denmark. Karup, the municipality itself is no longer existent since it was one of the areas that were merged to other areas to form the now Viborg municipality.
The only airline that operates at the Karup airport is Norwegian Air Shuttle, which has 4 daily flights to and from Copenhagen with a Boeing 737 aircraft.
Opened in November 1965, the airport initially had single daily flights with a 15-passenger Heron plane. It was three years later in 1968 that the first terminal was built to cater to its passengers. The iconic building or terminal that is used today was built in 1991 by architect firm Torsten Riss Andersen with the building being called Glasshouse on the Heath. It was also inaugurated in the same year.
Former owner of Karup airport was Cimber Sterling but they declared bankruptcy in 2012, where the last scheduled flight happened in May of that year. Today, the airport is operated by Karup Lufthavn a.m.b.a. and is currently a public and military airport, with 14 daily flights and 200,000 passengers a year passing through its gates.
If you plan to take your meals at the airport, there is the Airport Café that provides meal boxes and pre packaged food to passengers. You can either eat them at the terminal or bring them with you to the plane. The Café can also provide fruit baskets, candy and also sells reading materials such as newspapers, magazines and other reading materials.
The airport also has 3 meeting or conference rooms that can accommodate 2 to 40 persons. There are audiovisual equipment available for presentations but there is no internet access at the airport. You can also have food and drinks catered to your scheduled meeting.
For airport assistance to those with reduced mobility or for unaccompanied children, you have to make arrangements with your airline company or your travel agency when you buy your ticket, as assistance is not readily available at the airport.
For those who go to the airport on private cars, there are several car parking areas that are free of charge and some are paid parking. The first 15 minutes are free while there are fees for the subsequent time. There’s an open space parking and a fenced one, which are open at least 2 hours before the airport’s first flight of the day.
The airport is relatively near the centre of Karup but there are buses that connect passengers from the airport to the Viborg cities and Holstebro. When you arrive, buses can be found at the right side of the departure hall. Buses coming from the cities are also scheduled to arrive at the airport 40 minutes before departure schedules.
Local taxi operators can also be found outside the terminal. Reservations can be made before departure and arrival. A teletaxi is also available that takes passengers to and from the airport and the Viborg bus station.
Reliable car rental companies are also offered at the airport such as Hertz, Avis and Europcar.
