The Kurgan Airport is the main domestic airport that serves the city of Kurgan in the Kurgan Oblast region of Russia. It also serves other cities and is one of the airports that links the cities of Moscow and Yekaterinburg to the town of Tobolsk, which is the historic capital of Siberia.
Kurgan is the administrative centre of the Kurgan Oblast region and sits strategically along the route of the Trans Siberial Railway between Omsk and Yekaterinburg. Due to this geographical position, the Kurgan Airport is an important mode of transportation that gives travellers easy access to other destinations in the region.
Operated by JSC Kurgan Airport, the Kurgan Airport handles medium sized airlines, with two local airlines operating flights to domestic destinations. RusLine has flights to Yekaterinburg, while UTair Aviation has daily flights to Moscow Vnukovo.
There is one asphalt runway at the airport, which is 2,061 meters long. In 2012, the airport celebrated the 100th anniversary of its first flight.
Today, the airport handles about 31,000 passengers a year but plans on expanding the airport with a finished date in 2015 will make the airport handle up to 60 thousand passengers.
The airport has a modest passenger terminal, complete with all the basic facilities that make waiting comfortable and convenient. Check in counters are easily found, which is near the waiting lounge.
There are no banks, currency exchange services, and ATMs at the airport but the city center is only 6km southeast of the airport, which is easy for passengers to reach.
There are also no hotels within the airport complex but the airport's close proximity to the city will give no problems for good places to stay. A hotel located 2km away is easily accessible, as well as the Akademiya Hotel, only 15 minutes from the airport.
A VIP Hall is available at the terminal, for a more private and comfortable place to wait. Separate check in, boarding, and baggage assistance are offered. Phones, TV, drinks, and other services are also available.
There is a ticketing office inside the terminal, as well as an information counter, where you can order a taxi or book a car rental.
The Kurgan Airport also has a unique Aviation Museum in its grounds. The Museum was built in 1985, showing exhibitions of 14 aircrafts in the open part of the airport's paved area. There are front line fighters, MiG -17 fighters, and other training and combat aircrafts.
Bus stops and taxis are easily accessed from the airport, which makes traveling to and from the airport a convenient one.
