Also known as Malmo Sturup Airport, Malmo Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Malmo, Sweden. The third largest city in terms of population, Malmo is a major city that sees a big number of tourists and visitors each year. About 2 million passengers go through the terminal of the airport each year.
Located 55 kilometers from the centre of Copenhagen, the Malmo Airport is a complement to the Copenhagen Airport where in cases of fog and strikes, Malmo Airport is used as another base for aircrafts and passengers. The airport is located 28 kilometers west of Malmo, in the Svedala municipality. The airport is also operated by Swedavia, a nationally owned company that owns and operates the major airports of Sweden.
The airlines that operate at Malmo airport are Al-Naser Airlines, Malmo-Aviation, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Ryanair, Scandinavian Airlines and Wizz Air. These airlines take Malmo Airport’s passengers to international destinations such as Baghdad, Stockholm, London, Belgrade, Budapest and Visby. Chartered flights are also serviced at the airport, with airlines Primera Air, Jet Time and Air Europa.
The airport was inaugurated on December of 1972 and is now the 5th busiest airport in the country.
Malmo Airport is equipped with accommodation, facilities and stores that offer merchandise and services to the millions of passengers. The Sturup Airport Hotel is located in walking distance from the main terminal building, which is only a 2 minute walk away. Currently, there are 68 rooms available for guests and has the capacity to accommodate a total of 100 guests, with free internet access, a pool, sauna and a tennis court.
Shopping can also be done at the airport, with a Duty Free shop offering merchandise such as perfumes and cosmetics, a 7-Eleven convenience store and newspaper stands. There are also several cafes and restaurants inside the airport with offerings of Swedish burgers, stir fry dishes, coffee and sweets. There is also free WiFi available at the passenger terminal, a bank, ATM machines and a currency exchange.
Children traveling alone and people with special needs can be accommodated at the airport, where they can be met by the gate and escorted to the waiting area and the aircraft. Conference rooms are also available for rent inside the airport, where meetings and presentations can be held.
Malmo Airport also accepts and organizes Airport Wedding Ceremonies. You can have civil and church weddings held at the lounge, where the airport can make arrangements for catering and seating for guests. Free parking for two weeks are given to the couple, making it convenient and easy for them to head straight to their honeymoon right after the wedding ceremony at the airport.
Rental cars are available at the airport with reputable companies such as Hertz, Avis, Budget and Europcar. There are also taxis with fixed prices that take passengers to Malmo and Lund. Buses are available every 30 minutes that take passengers to and from the airport. Buses can also take passengers to train connections in Malmo, with Copenhagen as a destination.
