The Old And New City Of Marrakech

Marrakech or Marrakesh is the third largest city and is one of the imperial cities that made up Morocco. The word Marrakesh comes from Amazigh (Berber) and it means “Land of God”. The city is located near the foot of the Atlas Mountain and it’s also a few hours away at the base of the Sahara desert. The location here is the perfect place to take a nice vacation because of its complementary landscape.

The city is divided into two main districts, which are the Medina and the Gueliz or Ville Nouvelle. Medina is the old part of the city which is composed of old structures and building and historical endeavors. The Gueliz or Ville Nouvelle is the modern part of the city with a European style settlement and has estimated population of more than a million inhabitants as of 2004. The city is also the center of business and economics in the mid-southwestern region.

Things to do

There is much to do and to see in Marrakech. The entire day can be devoted to just walking around the city. There are so many old and historical buildings here in the old city which is impossible to see them all in one day. The Dar Si Saïd Museum is a good place to start to learn more about the place and its historical significance. The El Bahia Palace is a good place to visit, this area will give you an idea what is like in the 19th century.

Djemaa El-Fna is the main square of the old city with an endless labyrinth of bazaars (Souks) which filled the park and alley ways. There also some bath houses or Hammams in the Marrakesh and paying them a visit will be a pleasurable experience. Looking for food isn’t that difficult the Djemaa El-Fna square is full of them if you want a quick snack but for bistro, you have to go to the other side of the city in Gueliz.

The Marrakech-Menara Airport is the international airport for Marrakesh with direct flight from London, Paris, Stockholm, Madrid and most major European cities. If you are coming in from Asia or America, you need to take connecting flights from Casablanca to Marrakesh. The airport is about 9km away from the city, and from there you can either walk for two hours if you're up to the challenge. Another is by taking a taxi which by the way the most convenient or you can take the bus shuttle and train.

Six years ago, the government of Morocco deregulated its airline businesses and confirmed their policy of open-skies. This action helped to boost the country’s tourism industry by making airborne travels less difficult. In fact, these days it has become easier for travelers to take flights in Marrakech Airport.  There are other airports that can be accessed within the region which reduces problems concerning transportation. This particular airport has been prepared to accommodate even additional flights in the future. This actuality facilitated the increase of tourist visitations and continual improvement of the tourism industry.

Tourists can do a lot of things to entertain themselves in these places and many remarkable places to visit. For groups and individuals who would like to visit Morocco’s best destinations, the Marrakech Airport can provide transportation services according to their needs. Instead of spending a long time traveling on the ground, they can take short flights to reach their destinations faster.
