Mombasa is a city located in Kenya, in the southern part of Africa facing the Indian Ocean. It is the second biggest city in Kenya, next to Nairobi, which is the capital. Mombasa is a trade center and has been so for the last thousand years.  Its importance as a trading center has been cemented since the ancient times when they used to trade with India and China, thus making Mombasa a prosperous place. Today, it is at the center of Coastal Tourism in Kenya because of its location, being near many of the tourist spots in the Indian Ocean.  It is serviced by an ocean shipping port and an international airport.

The city’s main airport is known as the Mombasa International Airport or the Moi International Airport. It is the second biggest airport in Kenya and operated by the Kenya Airports Authority. It was formerly a military airport in World War II which was put to civilian use after the war. It has two main runways and caters to both cargo and passenger aviation transport. Mombasa Airport Guide

Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, which is located in the continent of Africa. There are a number of transportation vehicles used to get in and around this city including trains, taxis, the Tuk-Tuk or auto rickshaw with three wheels, Matatus or mini-buses, the Boda-Boda, ferries, ships and of course, airplanes. Planes are still the fastest way to get to Mombasa, especially for international travelers. That is why it is still the most popular and preferred mode of transportation for visitors of the city. They go through the Moi International Airport, which is also referred to as the Mombasa Airport. It was named after ex-Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi.

The airport’s International Air Transport Association (IATA) airport code is MBA. Their International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) airport code is HKMO. It is located in the Port Reitz or Chaani area in southeastern Kenya. It was called the Port Reitz Airport because of its location. It is operated by Kenya Airports Authority or KAA. It has two runways, namely Runway 1 or Runway 03/21, which has an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Runway 2 or Runway 15/33.

For passengers arriving at the Mombasa Airport who are over one year old and coming from countries infected by yellow fever, such as Central and West Africa, Southeast Asia, Central and South America, Bangladesh, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka, yellow fever vaccination certificates are required. These certificates are only valid 10 days from vaccination. Upon arrival at the airport, arrival forms must already be filled up before proceeding to the passport control area. For international arrivals, go to the Main Lobby where a customer service desk for taxis can be found, as well as car hire services. There are also public buses, which cost 40 Kenya Shillings and leave after every half hour. It takes passengers to and from the center of the city.

For departures, passengers and their luggage must be screened at the walkway detector and screening machine area. Afterwards, they need to go to the check in area and wait for security to verify traveling documents before filling in the departure form, checking in at the Airline counter and presenting one’s departure form, passport and boarding ticket. After going through these steps, they can now proceed to the departure area, where another security check will be conducted before they are allowed to go through the security gate.

Like other airports, MBA has facilities and services that cater to the needs of their customers including cargo and left luggage facilities, banks, automated teller machines (ATMs), foreign exchange bureaus, lounges, prayer areas, business centers and restaurants. Avid shoppers can also check out several stores, especially the Kenya Duty Free Complex. More information about the Mombasa Airport can be found at the official website.
