If you are going to visit Uruguay, the first city that you must visit is its capital, Montevideo. The settlement was established around 1726 to strategically counter the Portuguese colony in Colonia del Sacramento. This city was briefly under the British rule in 1870 and it was involved in a major naval battle in World War II. This capital of Uruguay has developed a rich cultural and architectural heritage that makes it a must visit tourist destination spot. It also displays an eclectic way of life mostly attributed by the Spanish, Portuguese, French, British, and Italian immigrants. In a recent consensus, Montevideo is capable of providing premier quality of life in Latin America.
With its rich history, many historical and interesting spots are available in Montevideo. Here are a few of the best spots you can visit during your travel in this city.
The Carassco International Airport boasts its chrome and glass terminal that is always clean and well maintained. In addition, it assures passengers of fast and smooth progress. Just after you land, you will be able to find a bank, automated teller machines, a post office, bureaux de exchange, duty free shops, a basic restaurant, and a bar. Almost everything you need after landing and starting your tour is here. In addition, Montevideo airport transfers are not a problem here.
There are also some desks at arrivals to let you rent a car during your stay in Montevideo. You must negotiate the fare that you will pay the airport taxi in advance. It usually takes around 30 minutes before a taxi arrives to pick you up, and the fare can often be more than a pre-booked airport transfer. On the other hand, three bus companies also run regular services to the city center.
Montevideo Airport Guide
Upon approaching the Montevideo Airport, make sure that you look down below to watch the nice beaches bathed by the scorching sun and the architecture of the past. The airport is itself a reminder of how the city scenery looked like in the past but the insides reflect the modern architecture of the 80s and the 90s. The main lobby is illuminated with natural light and the whole place is spotlessly clean.
One nice thing about this airport is the zero line – meaning, there are no long lines to bear as immigration is designed not to take more than a few minutes. Your luggage will also be efficiently delivered.
Both arrival and departure systems are comfortable, but you have to take note of big holidays when queues may be long.
Transportation is easy if you want to immediately reach downtown which is 30 minutes from the airport. Taxis are abundant and comfortable and there is a free parking lot to use while arranging your luggage. If you need to hire a car, car rental companies are not located on the terminal but there’s an efficient shuttle to take you to their offices.
Eating, Drinking and Shopping
Apart from the excellent transport services, the Montevideo Airport management team makes sure that passengers have what they need before going to customs. Foods are good and not too expensive as in other airports. Some passengers find the eatery selection a bit limited so you have to be in the business class lounge to avoid the inconvenience.
In this airport, you should do your duty-free shopping at arrival rather than departure as deals are better for arriving passengers. Still, you will notice the very low prices in the duty-free shops, in comparison to those in other airports.
Aside from these, you can see a newsagent, a chemist shop, a tourist info office, a post office, and some money exchange bureaus.
Arrival/Departure Procedures in the Montevideo Airport
Upon arrival, passengers are bussed to immigration. Prior to picking up your luggage, all your hand baggage will be x-rayed and your customs forms will be collected. The baggage goes onto a carousel for you to pick up. Right after this, you will see a money-exchange shop just outside. The exchange rate is lower in the airport than in the Sheraton hotel located downtown.
On return trip, checking-in is quick taking like only 10 minutes from leaving the TAM control to the time you will be sitting at the gate. The entire departure procedure is composed of checking-in at the TAM control section, payment of departure tax, scanning of tax receipts, then going to the passport control section and then finally going to the departure gate.
