Hans Christian Andersen Airport
The Hans Christian Andersen Airport is also known as Beldringe Luftham airport and formerly called Odense Airport. Located in the village of Beldringe, which is northwest of Odense, it serves the municipalities of Bogense, Nordfyn, Otterup and Munkebo. Odense is the 3rd largest city of Denmark, with an estimated 200,000 in population, making the airport an important mode of transportation for its residents and of the neighboring areas.
The airport’s operator is Odense Lufthavn s.m.b.a. and only has scheduled flights during the summer season. Private chartered flights can also be made any time of the year. The airport is also a test center for UAS, which stands for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Since the year 2007, the airport has been owned by the cities Odense and Nordfyn.
The airlines that operate at Odense Airport are Aegean Airlines, Malmo Aviation and Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia, which takes passengers to and from Chania, Rome, Billund, Kavala, Burgas, Antalya and a few other destinations.
The Hans Christian Andersen Airport was constructed in the 1940’s to serve as an airport for the military during the German occupation. In 1998, government operations at the airport were finally suspended. Reconstructions and improvements were made throughout the years with an extension to the airstrip made in 2007. It was only in 2013 that Odense Airport was changed to Hans Christian Andersen Airport, in honor of the famous Danish poet and author who wrote children’s classic novels The Princess and the Pea, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina, among many others.
Since the airport only has scheduled flights during the summer seasons, there aren’t much facilities available in the airport during off seasons, when chartered flights are made. However, during the summer, there are plenty of services at the airport that cater to the needs of the passengers.
One of these services is the Conference Room, where meetings and presentations can be done. Even parties can also be held at the airport’s conference room. Professional and personal arrangements can be made. All you have to do is contact the event coordinator where he will make arrangements for your event or meeting. Catering is provided by the airport where meals, snacks and beverages can be served.
A Kiosk is also available at the terminal with items for sale such as toiletries, perfumes, travel essentials, cosmetics and even ice cream and chocolates. Popular products include Nivea, Nina Ricci and MaxFactor. All items for sale are 25% lower than their retail prices. There is also a café that serves food and drinks such as bread rolls, prepackaged snacks, drinks, pastries and breakfast meals.
There are two parking choices for private cars – a free open air parking space and a protected paid parking space. Taxis can be booked early or you can avail of one outside the terminal building. You can also book a car rental online and have a vehicle delivered to the airport.
