Orel Airport Guide
Orel, or more commonly known as Oryol in Imperial Russia, had been in and out of ruins for over half a millennium, battling its way through freedom and progress with colonization and rebellions. For hundreds of years, the town has been transferred to different jurisdictions and political bodies until it was made the administrative enter of Oryol Oblast. With its long line of history, Oryol has now grown from a fortress at the south end of the country to a mildly developed urban center with a population of more than three hundred thousand. Ultimately, it is developed enough to operate its own airport.
Oryol Yuzhny Airportis a small air hub located just six kilometers at the south west of the city. Despite the Orel airport’s considerably small facility and shorter runway, the airport is still able to receive ample air traffic to make its aviation presence as significant as it currently is. As it caters to Oryol Oblast and nearby provinces, the importance of the facility is considered as great as the nearest major airports.
In the 1950s up to the 70s, the Orel airport had been used and operated by military divisions and was a primary military airbase for decades. Small fighter aircrafts, such as Yak-17, MiG-15/17 and 19, were regularly landing and being serviced in the facility. When the operation was directly handed to the government, the facility’s record of military servicing prompted them to apply the same level of security, which is still being enjoyed by flight passengers.
Due to the small facility and parking space of the Orel airport, the commercial flights accommodated are only chartered flights and private aircrafts. Nonetheless, servicing facilities are available on the ground but more advanced services may be availed on-call from the city or nearby administrative centers.
As of now, no plans for expansion of the ground or development of the facilities are expected. Since the size of the airport is able to handle all the needed personal flights to the area, it is most likely that any commercial establishments in Oryol Yuzhny Airportwill also not have changes any time soon.
