Oskemen Airport Guide

Almaty International Airport

The Almaty International Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Almaty, which is Kazakhstan’s largest and former capital city. The largest international airport in the country, the Almaty International Airport was able to handle over 4 million passengers in 2012.

The Almaty International Airport also serves other cities in the region including the city of Oskemen. Located 15 km northeast of the city centre, the airport accounts for 50% of the country’s air traffic in passengers and about 70% of cargo traffic. This public airport is operated by JSC Almaty International Airport.

Serving as the hub for Air Astana, SCAT and Bek Air, the airport has a very significant geographical location as it sits comfortably on the route from South East Asia to Europe. This special location gives the airport great advantage when it comes to providing an easy route between Asia and Europe.

The airport was established n 1935 serving small aircrafts for both civil and military use. It was used by the Kazakhstan Department of Civil Aviation until 1990. In 1993, the airport was named the “Alma-Ata Airport” and then to “Almaty International Airport” in 1994. It received international status in the year 1998. In 1999, the passenger terminal burned down and was reconstructed shortly after. The new passenger terminal opened in 2004.

Currently, there are plans on building a new passenger terminal that will increase the airport’s passenger capacity to 2,500 passengers per hour. Other future plans include a Marriott Hotel within the airport complex, a conference and business shall, a shopping centre and cinemas at the terminal. This new terminal will be located at the Kuldja Road area of the airport to reduce traffic going to the airport.

The airport’s passenger terminal provides maximum facilities to give its passengers utmost comfort and security. Inside the terminal, you can find an information desk, cafes, bars, restaurants and fast food services. There’s also a baggage room where you can pay a fee to leave your luggage at the airport while you tour the city. There’s also a currency exchange facility, a mother and child room, a First Aid post, a lost and found facility, a Prayer Room, several booking offices and a consulate.

For last minute shopping, you can happily do so at the terminal’s Duty Free shops and at a few souvenir stores, as well. You can also buy reading material from a newspaper kiosk. ATM units are also available within the terminal, as well as internet services, pay phones and a post office.

VIP services are also offered at the Almaty Airport, providing maximum comfort for first class passengers. There’s a bar, cable TV, free reading materials and food and drinks served inside the Lounge.

There are no hotels within the airport but the closest one is only 2 minutes away from the airport, which is the Lequipage Hotel.

You can get a taxi once you arrive, or also book a car rental. There are also 4 bus routes that take passengers to and from the airport all throughout the day in only short interval times.
