Mundo Maya International Airport
Formerly called the Flores International Airport, the Mundo Maya International Airport is the 2nd busiest in Guatemala. Located in the suburb of Santa Elena, which is on the outskirts of the city of Flores, the airport is a dual airport for both military and public use.
Aside from serving the city of Flores, the airport can also be used by passengers who want to reach the town of Panajachel. The town in the Southwestern Guatemala Highlands is the centre of tourism in the region, famous for the Lake Atitlan, which is a volcanic lake. Most people who use the Mundo Maya airport travel to Flores because of its very close proximity to Tikal, which is the most famous Mayan ruins in the entire Guatemala.
Operated by the same company that manages the premier airport of Guatemala, Mundo Maya International Airport is run by the Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil.
The airport has one runway that’s 3000 meters long. Servicing medium sized aircrafts, the airport handles three airlines that operate daily and weekly flights to and from different parts of the country and to nearby Central American cities. The airlines that operate at the Mundo Maya Airport are Aviance, with a route to Guatemala City; Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos, with flights to Guatemala City and Tropic Air with flights to Belize City.
Tropic Air is an inexpensive choice for passengers who want to get to Flores from Belize. Providing a light aircraft to passengers, view of the magnificent rainforest can be seen from the air when you’re coming from Belize. Daily flights from the Philip Goldson International Airport are offered.
TACA airlines used to operate flights from Flores to and from Cancun but has since stopped in 2011.
The airport provides a passenger terminal that has modest facilities. There are comfortable waiting areas and short lines for check in. There are no hotels within the complex of the airport but the nearest one and most preferred is the Hotel Maya Internacional Santa Elena which is located in close proximity to the airport.
Parking at the airport is convenient with both paid and free parking. Valet parking is also available for a certain fee. The parking area is located across the passenger terminal.
Getting to and from the airport of Mundo Maya is quite easy. The distance from the airport to the Flores causeway that connects the city to the mainland is only 2 km. There are taxi services available once you arrive at the airport. Minibus shuttles to Tikal and to other areas can be found outside the arrival gate, located near the parking area.
If you want to avail of the local public mode of transportation, you can walk to the main road right outside the airport and avail of the services of tuk-tuks, which are 3 –wheeled motorcycle taxis.
You can also check with your hotel if they can provide you with their very own pick up services or you can also book a car rental before or once you arrive at the Mundo Maya International Airport.
