Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport
The Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport is the main airport servicing the city of Salvador, which is the largest capital located northeast of Brazil in the state of Bahia. Formerly known as Dois de Julho International Airport, it is the 8th busiest airport in the country, in terms of passengers transported and 7th in terms of aircraft operations. Operated by Infraero, a Brazilian government corporation operating most of the country’s top airports, a number of both local and international airlines operate in the airport.
International airlines bring passengers to and from Salvador to destinations such as Miami, Buenos Aires, Lisbon, Frankfurt and other international cities. Such airlines include Air Europa, TAP Portugal, Andes Lineas Aereas, Condor, and a few others.
The road to the airport from the city of Salvador is one of the most scenic routes in the entire country. The scenes are already a tourist attraction in itself, with over 6 million square meters of sand dunes and native vegetation.
The Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport was founded in 1925 with a different name. It was first called Santo Amaro do Ipitinga Airport, but was later changed in 1995 to Dois de Julho International Aiprort. Most of the residents in Salvador still call the airport with that name. It was in 1998 that the name was changed to its current name, in honor of the state politician Luis Eduardo Maron Magalhaes, who was very influential in the area.
The airport’s terminals have one of the most impressive terminals in Brazil. Inside the main terminal is a shopping mall, with all the amenities and facilities that one can think of. VIP lounges for businessmen and other individuals offer showers, large comfortable seating, food and drinks, and a space away from the rest of the passengers.
There are countless restaurants, coffee shops, fast food and cafes located on all levels of the airport, as well as souvenir and gift shops. You can literally have your shopping done inside the airport. If you only spent your time touring the sites around Salvador, buying souvenirs at the airport won’t be a problem. Restaurants are also very impressive, where you can have a full meal, sushi, pizza, grilled offerings, and even fast food joints. A duty free is also available inside the airport, as well as a bookstore.
A bank and several ATM machines are available to use at the arrival floor, as well as 2 currency exchange units, which is perfect for international tourists.
Several services are also offered such as a post office, a medical post, tourist service center, comfort stations, a hairdresser, and a number of travel agencies.
Ample paid parking is available outside the main building.
There are no hotels inside the airport but the closest one is only 3 kilometers away. Once you go out of the main terminal, taxis and bus transports are available all day to take you to the city and nearby locations. Car rental services are also available to your liking.
