Navoi International Airport
The Navoi International Airport is the main international airport that serves the city of Navoi in Uzbekistan. The city is named after Turkish politician and mystic Ali-Shir Nava'I and also serves as the basis of the terminal's name.
The Navoi International Airport is also used by passengers who wish to travel to the city of Samarkand, which is 174 km away. Samarkand is a melting pot of different cultures. Also known as Stone Front or Rock Town, the city is the country's 2nd largest city and highly renowned for being included in the World Heritage List for its colorful and historical culture and past.
The airport was opened in 1962 and has one concrete runway, which is 4,000 meters long. Owned by the government of Uzbekistan, the airport is a public civilian airport operated by Uzbekistan Airways. A 10-year master plan for modernization and renovation began in 2009, which means the airport is still under large scale reconstructions today. The master plan began when Korean Air, the world's largest cargo carrier took over the airport's management.
The Navoi International Airport has a very significant location since it is only 6 flying hours away from some of the world's major aviation hubs such as the airports in Milan, Dubai, India, Shanghai and Frankfurt. It is because of its location that makes this airport a significant and important part of Uzbekistan's transportation.
Currently, there are only three airlines operating at the Navoi International Airport. Aeroflot has scheduled flights to St. Petersburg, while Moskovia Airlines provides flights to Moscow – Domodedovo and Uzbekistan Airways providing flights to Tashkent, St. Petersburg and Moscow Domodedovo.
There are currently two terminals at the Navoi International Airport, where Terminal A is for domestic flights and terminal B for international flights.
There are no hotels or places to stay for the night inside the airport complex but the nearest one can be found 20 km away. The Silk Road Palace is a highly recommended hotel which is close to the airport, offering 4-star amenities, complete with a conference hall, gym and sauna.
Dining at the airport is provided by a few restaurants and cafes. On the first floor of the departure areas, passengers can get a good meal or a light snack while they wait for their flights. Oasis Bar, where you can order special drinks and liquor, can be found in the lobby.
There are also ATMs, money exchange and money transfer services at the terminals. The national currency is mainly used to avail of products and services, but the US dollar is also accepted by a few establishments.
Medical services are also provided at the airport, which can be found inside the terminal halls.
Getting to and from the airport is conveniently done by private car, as the airport offers parking spaces for over 100 cars. If you wish to get to other cities nearby, such as Samarkand, you can get on a bus at the airport and go to the train station to get a ride. You can also avail of taxi services, as well as car rentals.
