Santos Airport Guide

Santos Dumont Airport

The Santos Dumont Airport is the 2nd major airport that services the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is named after Alberto Santos Dumont, who was an aviation pioneer. In 2012, the airport was 6th in terms of transported passengers among all airports in Brazil, as well as 6th in aircraft operations, making it one of the busiest in the country.

Operated by Brazilian government corporation Infraero, the Santos Dumont Airport is one of only three airports in Brazil that has slot restrictions with a maximum of only 23 operations occurring per hour.

The airport mainly services the city of Rio de Janeiro but it is also the closest airport to its nearby cities and towns. Praia de Forte, a beach and coastal village in the Bahia state, is 119 kilometers away and is a popular tourist destination that can easily be reached from the Santos Dumont Airport.

Originally named Calabouco Airport, it was built in the 1930’s as a public terminal for seaplanes. Since these planes became obsolete in the early 1940’s, it stopped operations and was only revived a short time later. The original building is now protected by the government and is now called the Historical and Cultural Institute of the Brazilian Air Force.

The airport handles over 8 million passengers a year with local airlines having domestic destinations. The airlines that operate in the Santos Dumont Airport are Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Gol Airlines, and TAM Airlines. These airlines bring passengers to cities like Sao Paulo, Salvador, Porto Alegre, and other major cities.

The airport has undergone a series of renovations to improve and expand its capacity, making way for more flights to operate on a daily basis. Today, major renovations and an investment plan is currently being implemented as Rio de Janeiro is one of the venue cities for the 2014 World Cup, that will see major arrivals of tourists before, during, and after the games. A new passenger arrival terminal is soon to be unveiled.

The Santos Dumont Airport has ample parking space for vehicles that can accommodate up to 1,200 cars, plus a few areas are designated for disabled drivers and passengers. The parking area is located across the main passenger building and has parking fees.

Two banks are available inside the main building, as well as 5 ATM machines, making it easy for passengers to do financial transactions without going out of the airport. There are also five restaurants inside, located at the departure area on the first floor, as well as newspaper stands. A post office is also available at the first floor, as well as a baby care unit for changing diapers, and a medical post for any medical emergencies and other health concerns.

There are also several shops available in the airport, with a gift shop and a drug store. Travel agencies are also present inside, making it easy for tourists to book a tour or a flight.

There are no hotels inside the airport but places to stay are in close proximity. The Aeroporto Othon Travel is a close 500 meters away from the airport, and a close 1.5 km away is the Hotel Atlantico Business Centro.
