Simferopol International Airport
The Simferopol International Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Simferopol, Ukraine. The airport got its name from the city of its location, which can be found on the Crimea region of the country. The capital of Crimea, Simferopol is the centre of politics and economy in the region, which gives the airport an important role in bringing in and taking travelers of the city to and from local and international destinations.
Established in 1936, the airport's terminal building was only built in 1957, followed by the concrete runway being constructed in 1960. Today, the airport serves as the main hub of Ukranian airlines Aerosvit and Air Onix. The main office of the now defunct Crimea Air was also located in the airport.
With over 1 million passengers passing through its gates in 2012, the Simferopol is considered to be one of the most important airports in the country. Several domestic and international airline carriers operate at the Simferopol airport, which are Aeroflot, Air Baltic, Ak Bars Aero, Atlasjet, Belavia, Khors Air, Red Wings Airlines, S7 Airlines, SCAT, Transaero Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Ukraine International Airlines, Ural Airlines, UTair Aviation, Uzbekistan Airways and a few others. Most of the flights, however, are seasonal schedules to cities such as Antalya, St. Petersburg, Minsk, Kazan, Moscow and others, while the scheduled flights are to destinations such as Kiev, Moscow, Tashkent and others.
The airport is fully equipped with the facilities needed of an international airport. There are three passenger terminals, Terminal C for domestic arrivals and departures, Terminal A for international arrivals and Terminal B for international departures.
If you want to find a good place to rest when you've just arrived at Simferopol or if you have an early flight the following day, a hotel which is only 5 minutes away is conveniently located. There are no hotels inside the airport, but this is the nearest one and is highly ideal for those who want to stay close to the airport.
For passengers who want to be productive while they wait for their flight, the Simferopol International Airport has a Business Lounge on the second floor of Terminal B, where passengers with Business Class tickets can take advantage of free internet and other office equipment.
There are also several places to get a good snack or meal inside the airport. Cafes and bars are found on both the 1st and 2nd floor areas of the terminals, while a full service restaurant can be found inside the airport's old terminal. Retail stores, a Duty Free shop and other retail stores are also available for any shopping needs.
WiFi is available throughout the airport, especially at the waiting areas. ATMs, currency exchange and money transfer services are easily found in the departure halls. A luggage facility where you can store your belongings is also provided on the first floor of the international terminal. For shipping and mail needs, a post office is available at the terminals' first floors.
There are several choices of private and public modes of transportation for passengers. For backpackers and those who are on a budget, a bus can be ridden at the airport that takes people to the main railway station. Thousands of passengers each year use the railway to get to the city centre of Simferopol and to other neighboring cities.
Taxi services and car rental companies are also available at the arrivals halls to cater to passengers who want a more private way to get to the city.
