Adler Sochi International Airport
The Sochi Airport is the 2nd largest in terms of passengers in Southern Russia. Located in the resort city of Sochi in the Adler District, the airport is also the 8th busiest in the entire country.
Sochi is famous for being Russia's largest resort city, where the 2014 Winter Olympics and the Paralympics Winter Games will be held. Because of these large scale world events, the city has been preparing for the massive number of visitors it will accommodate during the games, with the Sochi airport included in the preparations with its expansions and renovations.
The airport has 2 asphalt runways - one is 7,218 meters long and the other, 9,482. In 2012, the airport was able to handle about 1.7 million passengers, with an average of 2,500 passengers per day.
The Sochi airport was first built in 1941 and was later used as a flight and maintenance facility for aircrafts in 1945. The year after, in 1946, the airport had its first passenger flight but it was only in 1956 that the first passenger terminal was built.
A newly built state of the art terminal was opened in 2010 which is part of the airport's efforts on modernization and improvements for the Winter Olympics. With the highest level of safety and comfort, the new terminal will be able to accommodate the expected large number of visitors who will be arriving and leaving during the duration of the events.
Several airlines operate at Sochi Airport, bringing passengers to domestic and international destinations. The airlines include Aeroflot, Air Moldova, Air Serbia, Belavia, Nordavia, NordStar, Orenair, Saravia, TajikAir, Scandinavian Airlines, Edelweiss Air, Ak Bars Aero, Lufthansa, Pegasus Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways, Yamal Airlines and UTair Airlines. Destinations include Moscow, Tashkent, Omsk, Perm, Tyumen, Istanbul, St.Petersburg, Yerevan, Tel Aviv, Tashkent, and seasonal flights to several other destinations such as Oslo and Frankfurt.
The airport's passenger terminal is one of the biggest in Russia, with three floors of 54,000 square km space, 440 meters of corridor space, and 10 boarding bridges. Parking can accommodate over 1000 vehicles, plus a newly opened VIP Terminal that has a 4000 square km floor area that is able to accommodate about 80 passengers per hour.
The passenger terminal does not offer free wireless internet but you can have access if you are in the VIP Lounge, which is isolated from the terminal, with a separate entrance and exit gate. There are several cafes, bars and shops throughout the terminal, as well as a post office, ATMs, currency exchange services, and a Hall for Officials and Delegations. There are no hotels inside the airport complex but several places to stay can be found in close proximity such as the Grand Hotel and Spa and the Radisson Resort and Congress.
Getting to and from the airport is convenient with a private car, taxi, and bus stop located in close distance to the terminal. Car rental companies such as Europcar can also be booked at the airport.
