Stavropol Shpakovskoye Airport
The Stavropol Shpakovskoye Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Stravopol, Russia. Located 13 km north east of the city, the airport is an important mode of transportation for civilians and for freight and cargo into the city.
Stavropol sits on a significant location as it is the front line between Russia and the North Caucasus. This strategic position gives the airport an advantage as it serves both the Russian city and its neighboring areas. This administrative centre of the Stavropol Krai, also boasts of having the biggest and best city park in the entire country.
The Stravopol airport, which is publicly owned and operated, is a civilian airport but also has a small military base in its complex. It is also home to the Stavropol Higher Military Aviation School for Pilot and Navigation, as well as the 218 Aviation Training Regiment, and the 463rd Separate Training Squadron.
Operated by the JSC Airport Starvopol, it has the capacity to handle medium sized aircrafts and has 14 aircraft parking spaces. It has one runway, which is an asphalt airstrip 2,632 meters long, and able to handle 18 flights everyday.
A few airlines operate at the Starvopol Airport, which are Aeroflot, with flights to Moscow – Sheremetyevo; Astra Airlines with flights to Thessaloniki in Macedonia on seasonal schedules; Moskovia Airlines, S7 Airlines, and Transaero Airlines with flights to Moscow Domodedovo; and UTair Aviation with flights to Moscow Vnukovo.
The Starvopol Airport was established in 1934, created to transport passengers, freight, and mail to the city. It has continued to operate over the decades, and in 1993, was honored the status of international airport. Its strategic geographical position makes it beneficial for flights within Europe, the Middle East, and the rest of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
In 2012, the airport was able to accommodate over 200,000 passengers, and over 1000 metric tons of cargo. It has the capacity to handle 300 passengers per hour, with about 130 of those for international travel, and the rest for domestic destinations.
The passenger terminal has enough facilities that will make passengers feel comfortable as they wait for their flights. The airport provides assistance to persons with disabilities, complete with meet up at the entrance and escort services to boarding the aircraft. There are no hotels inside the airport but since the city center is a close 9 km, plenty of hotels are easily reached from the airport, such as the VIP Hotel.
Getting to the airport is quite easy. You can get a car rental by booking one online and having it delivered at the airport, or you can also get a taxi outside the terminal building. If you go the airport in a private car, parking is accessible 24 hours a day.
If you're on a budget, a service bus at the airport is available, though it will take longer to reach the city, it is still a convenient and most of all affordable way to get to your destination.
