Vnukovo International Airport
The 4th busiest airport in Russa, the Vnukovo International Airport serves the city of Moscow and is one of three major airports in the city. It also serves other cities in the neighboring region such as the city of Stupino 122 km away, the administrative center of the Stupinsky District of Moscow Oblast.
This public airport is operated by JSC Vnukovo Airport and is the hub for a number of major airlines- Transaero Airlines, UTair Aviation, Gazpromavia, I-Fly, Red Wings Airlines, and Yakutia Airlines. There are two concrete runways, with one 3,000 meters in length, and the other 3, 060 meters.
In 2012, over 10 million passengers used the airport, along with 149,000 400 aircraft movements that year. The oldest operating airport in Moscow, the Vnukovo Airport was opened in 1941 but its construction started in 1937. By the year 1956, the airport was able to handle its first passenger commercial flight to Irkutsk on board a Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft.
2003 saw the airport's massive reconstruction and development program to modernize and expand the international airport for more comfort and bigger passenger capacity. It is also dubbed as Europe's biggest airport in terms of international flights by larger private planes.
With the capacity of 3000 passengers per hour, the Vnukovo passenger terminals are very impressive in terms of size and available facilities. There are two passenger terminals – A and B, one general aviation terminal for charter and business flights, one cargo terminal, and sixty aircraft stands. A VIP transport wing is found on the northern part of the airport for head of state flights. Upon departure and arrival of VIP passengers, the airport is closed to its regular flights.
The main terminal, which is Terminal A handles both domestic and international flights, while Terminal B handles international flights only, and a Terminal D handles domestic flights that come from the North Caucasus only.
Passenger check in counters are found on the second floor of the terminals, with fee WiFi connection in Terminal A and paid access in Terminal B. There are also smoking rooms available at the terminals, along with cafes, restaurants, and snack bars. A Duty Free can be found at the international terminal, plus other kiosks selling souvenirs and other items. Medical clinics can also be found in the terminals as well as a mother and child room on the 2nd floor of Terminal A and on the first floor of Terminal D.
A VIP Lounge can also be found on the 3rd floor of the main terminal, with separate entrance and exit for its passengers. Currently, there is an ongoing development program at the airport with a tentative finished date in 2015, which will transform the airport into a highly competitive air transportation hub with great international significance.
Conveniently, an affordable way to get to and from the airport can be availed through the Aeroexpress train line located on the underground level of the airport, as well as the Kiyersky Rail Terminal that offers direct lines to the Moscow city center, with only 35 minutes of travel time. If you prefer a more private and more comfortable way to get to the city and nearby places, you can get a taxi or get a car rental at the arrival hall. Buses are also available with routes to and from the city.
