Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport
The Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Tangier, which is the capital city of the Moroccan Tangier-Tetouan region. The airport was named after Ibn Battouta, who was one of the world’s greatest travelers during his lifetime in the 13th century. He was also a Moroccan scholar and great traveler who was renowned all over the world. Formerly called the Tangier-Boukhalef Airport, the Tangier Airport is an international airport that serves over 600,000 passengers a year with 8,355 aircraft movements.
The airport is predicted to receive more traffic since Tangier is currently undergoing massive development and modernization. Five star hotels on beachfronts, a modern business district and a football stadium are currently being constructed in this tourist city. Morocco’s 2nd most industrialized city, the Tangier Airport is expected to even receive more traffic in 2015 when the city will host some of the games for the 2015 African Cup of Nations Football Tournament, which the country will host.
Tangier Airport is operated by ONDA and is the hub of airlines Air Arabia Maroc and Royal Air Maroc. The summer season is the busiest time for the airport with all the tourists and people on vacation come to the city. The airport is conveniently located only 11 kilometers from the city centre.
There are several airlines that operate at the Tangier Airport, which are Air Arabia Maroc, EasyJet, Jetairfly, Royal Air Maroc, German Wings, Ryanair and TAP Portugal. These airlines have destinations such as London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Paris, Cologne, Madrid, Rotterdam, Casablanca, Charleroi, Beauvais, Hahn and Lisbon.
The airport has two runways that can accommodate the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A380-800. The passenger terminal is 6,200 square meters big, designed to have the capacity to handle over 1 million passengers each year.
The airport has enough facilities and amenities in its premises to serve the needs of the passengers that go through its gates.
There is one bank inside the terminal, which is the Bureau De Change and ATM machines are also available. There’s also a post office which is open from Mondays to Fridays. A private Prayer Room is also available inside the terminal, plus a 24/7 emergency care unit, able to administer first aid services. There are also several restaurants where you can have a full meal or order a light snack.
The airport’s new terminal boasts of an art gallery and free WiFi in all access points.
There are no hotels or places to stay inside the airport but the nearest hotel can be found a short 3 kilometers away from the passenger terminal.
The Tangier airport also has a VIP Lounge with impressive amenities, which is called the Salon Convives de Marque, one of only 6 airports in the country that offer this Lounge.
Grand Taxis are the only taxis that can take you to and from the airport, where their prices are fixed. There are no direct buses that go to and from the airport so the primary means of transportation is either a private car, car rental, or the Grand Taxis.
