Tbilisi International Airport
The Tbilisi International Airport is formerly known as the Novo Alexeyevka International Airport. It is the main international airport that serves Georgia, located 17 km southeast of the capital of Tbilisi. It is a public civilian airport operated by the United Airports of Georgia LLC, which is run by TAV Airports Holding.
In 2012, the airport was able to handle over 1 million passengers. It has two runways and connects passengers to cities in Europe and Asia.
The airport was established in 1952 with its main terminal building designed by famous architect V. Beridze. The original building was designed using Stalinist architecture. In 1990, a new terminal was built but this time with international style. During the early 1980's the Tbilisi International Airport was the 12th largest airport in the Soviet Union, but its significance to the region decreased. From 1.5 million handled passengers in a year, it went down to only 200,000 in 1998.
The airport as garnered several honors throughout the years, including the Golden Brand Award during the Golden Brand Ceremony of the most influential Business Awards in Georgia.
The Tbilisi International is complete with all the necessary facilities to cater to the needs of its passengers. The terminal's ground floor is occupied by the arrivals and check in zones, while the 3rd floor is for departures.
There are several lounges offered at the airport. On the 3rd floor, you can find the VIP lounges of several airlines, with ultra modern facilities such as provisions for business work, an open buffet, an art museum ambience and a general atmosphere of privacy and discretion.
Food services at the airport are also available. There are coffee shops that are open 24/7 around the terminal, a British pub and even a burger fast food joint.
For shopping, there are Duty Free Shops located at the departure are, complete with all the essential items for sale for tax-free world class brands of jewelry, perfume, accessories, tobacco products and many others.
Other facilities include a mother and child room for mothers and their children up to 7 years of age, an information desk, a medical post, luggage wrapping services, 6 ATM units, 5 banks and currency exchange services.
Taxi services can be found on the outside of the Arrivals Hall offering 24/7 services. Shuttle buses are also available at the airport with three stops throughout the city, which are also available at the airport 24/7. The buses stop right outside the arrivals hall, making it convenient for passengers from the city to make their way inside the passenger terminal.
You can also use the airport railway station to ride a train heading to the city centre, which is the cheapest and easiest way to get to Tbilisi. Located only 70 meters from the terminal, you can walk to the station and ride the train that will take only 20 minutes to get to the city.
You can also book a car rental should you want to drive your own car or you can also request one with a driver.
