Ulan Ude Airport
The Ulan Ude Airport, also known as Lake Baikal Airport in an international airport located 12 kilometers west of the city of Ulan Ude, Russia. The capital city of the Republic of Buryatia, Russia, is well known for being the starting point of tourists who wish to visit Lake Baikal – which is one of the oldest and clearest lakes in the world.
The airport's geographical position gives it an advantage as it is highly ideal for technical landing, refueling, handling of cargo and commercial flights to areas of the Asia Pacific, Russia and China. Its close proximity to Lake Baikal and the region's tourist economic zones provide great opportunity for the airport to attract a big number of passengers per year.
Operated by JSC International Airport Ulan Ude, this public airport owned by the Russian Federation serves as the hub for several airlines such as Bural, IrAero, Nordwind Airlines and PANH. The airport has 3 runways, 2 of which are grass airfields and the other concrete. One of the main airports used in the region, it handled about 200,000 passengers in 2012, over 2,000 aircraft movements, with a terminal handling capacity of 400 passengers per hour.
Several airlines both domestic and international operate at the Ulan Ude, which are Aeroflot, Ural Airlines, S7 Airlines, Bural, Hunnu Air, IrAero, NordStar, Nordwind Airlines, Transaero and Yakutia Airlines. The Ulan Ude Airport was founded in 1925, offering regular air passenger service in 1926. The airport continued to operate over the years, with renovations and expansions occurring. In 2006, a complete overhaul of the runway occurred and renovations of the taxiways and parking areas of the apron were completed in 2007.
There is only one terminal building at the airport, with complete facilities providing maximum comfort to the passengers who pass through its gates every year. For shopping and basic needs, the terminal offers a supermarket which offers basic merchandise plus many Russian products. Fish, pine nuts and other souvenirs can be found in the store. A stand – alone souvenir shop is also available in the waiting room of the 2nd floor, selling local crafts of the region. A kiosk for newspapers and magazines is also available.
A ticketing office is located inside the terminal, for those who want to rebook their flights, or purchase new tickets. Should you wish to eat before or after your flight, the terminal building has a café where you can eat and buy drinks, including coffee. If you need to withdraw some cash, there are 3 ATMs located inside the terminal, as well as a mini office of the Baykal Bank.
Passengers who wish to have a more comfortable and private waiting area can avail of the VIP services. Business class ticket holders are also offered the business lounge. In the VIP room, passengers get to check-in privately and/ or wait in a more spacious and comfortable area located in the 2nd floor. Food and drinks are served, as well as reading materials, free wireless internet and a bar.
An automated parking space is located in front of the terminal, with space available for more than 350 cars, for those who get to the airport in a private or rental car. The city center of Ulan Ude is only 15 kilometers away, which is a 20-minute drive, making it easy and quick to get to and from the airport. The official airport taxi is the "New Yellow Taxi," available at the terminal. Fixed route buses can also be availed outside the terminal, which pass through the city center and back to the airport.
