This dual airport for public and military use is operated by the Military of Laos, which has a military air force installation at one end of the airport complex. Other airlines that use the Wattay International Airport as their hub are Lao Airlines and Lao Central Airlines.
Several airlines that offer both domestic and international routes operate at the airport, which are Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, China Eastern Airlines, Jin Air, Lao Air, Lao Airlines, Lao Central Airlines, Thai Air Asia, Thai Smile and Vietnam Airlines. Destinations include several cities in Laos and international cities such as Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and many others. Lao Airlines offers 5 domestic destinations, as well as Lao Central Airlines, offering daily flights to Luang Prabang.
The capital city of Laos, Vientiane is the most important economic and social centre of the country. It is the largest city and sits on the border of Thailand, where there is always a heavy influx of tourists who visit the city for its many temples and Buddhist monuments. The airport terminals consist of an old and small domestic and a new international building. Facilities are ensured to give passengers the utmost comfort, security and convenience while they wait for their flights and when they arrive from different parts of Laos or countries.
The terminals facilities include a bank, several ATM units, a currency exchange facility, post office and first aid post. You can also do some last minute shopping in case you weren’t able to do so during your trip. There are Duty free shops inside the international terminal, as well as souvenir shops of local handicrafts. You can also buy newspapers and magazines to take with you on your flight. There is also a big number of good places to eat inside, such as cafes, restaurants and bars that offer alcoholic drinks.
There is no hotel inside the terminal but most hotels in Vientiane offer airport pick up services that make it convenient for you to get to the city. There are also taxis waiting for passengers to arrive, where you can avail of a taxi coupon before you make your way out of the terminal building. If you wish to take public transportation, you can walk to the main road where you can find buses that will take you to the city. You can also ride a “tuk-tuk” which is a cabin cycle or a 3-wheeled motorcycle rickshaw to the city. You can also head your way to the local railway station if you wish to get to the other cities around Vientiane.
