The Tamale Airport is the main airport that serves the town of Tamale in the Volta region of Northern Ghana. This public and military airport was opened in 1948 as a base for the Ghana Air Force. Together with the runway, several structures were built such as the aerodrome control tower, rescue and fire fighting service, air traffic control offices, a stand-by generator and waiting areas.
The airport is also the main airport that serves the Volta region. Dominated by Lake Volta, the region is a highly renowned tourist destination and is famous for its festivals and ceremonies, as well as its many beautiful beaches. Tamale is the hub for all commercial and administrative activities in the region, making the airport an important point of entry and mode of transportation by the residents and the thousands of tourists who visit the region each year.
The airport is located 11 miles from the city centre of Tamale and serves about 4000 passengers per month. It also serves other regions such as Bolga and the neighboring cities. Tamale is a very quiet town and not much industrialization can be found. But because of the growing demand for more flights and the local government's move on bringing in more investors and producing more exports, the airport is now undergoing a large scale renovation program.
The Ministry of Transport has just signed an agreement with Geiros Galvao Construction to improve and expand the airport. By the time the projects are done, the Tamale Airport will serve as an alternative airport to the Kotoka International Airport found in the country's capital of Accra. This project will be bringing in more tourists, more investors and will provide the necessary transport hub for exportation of local products. It will also serve as an easier way of transportation for pilgrims who wish to fly to Mecca and Saudi Arabia.
Though the airport serves domestic flights, it received international status in 2008 when it received airlines coming from South Africa, Tunisia and Angola during the 2008 African Cup of Nations. Today, three airlines operate at the Tamale airport, which are Africa World Airlines, Antrak Air and Starbow Airlines, who provide 35 domestic flights to other cities in Ghana every week.
The airport has a single passenger terminal, with a car park and a VVIP Lounge. There are offices for customs and immigration, comfortable waiting areas and other facilities such as a pay phone and first aid medical care services. Since the airport's traffic is quite small there are no long queues at the airport for check in, making it convenient for passengers.
The nearest hotel to the airport is the African Dream Hotel, which is located 7 miles from the airport.
Getting to and from the Tamale airport can be made through a car rental, private vehicle or taxi. You can order a taxi or get one at the airport. Car rentals can also be delivered to you at the airport. There are also mini buses available by the road and you can also rent a bike or motorbike to get to the city centre.
