Moscow – Vnukovo
The Moscow Vnukovo Airport is one of the three airports that serves the Russian capital city of Moscow. The 4th busiest international airport in the country, the Moscow Vnukovo Airport is a dual runway international airport located 28 km southwest from the city center of Moscow.
The Vnukovo Airport is also one of the airports that passengers use to get to the city of Vyborg, which is 470 miles away. From Moscow, passengers can take a train to the city.
The Vnukovo Airport was opened during the 2nd World War, but it was mainly used for military operations. Years later, after the war, it was then used for civilian aviation.
Operated by JSC Vnukovo Airport, it serves as the hub for several airlines such as Gasproavia, I-Fly, Red Wings Airlines, Transaero Airlines, UTair Aviation and Yakutia Airlines. There are two concrete runways, used by 24 airlines that head to over 100 destinations all over the world. Every single week, the airport has over 800 domestic and 686 international flights. In 2012 alone, the airport handled over 10 million passengers and 149,400 aircraft movements.
The oldest of Moscow's airports, the Vnukovo Airport is also considered as Europe's busiest airport for international flights of private planes.
There are two passenger terminals at Vnukovo, one general aviation terminal for charter and business flight and one cargo terminal. The passenger terminals are called Terminal A, Terminal B and a Terminal D that is used for domestic arrivals coming from North Caucasus only.
Terminal A is the main passenger terminal and one of the largest in Europe. An Aeroexpress rail station is located at the underground level, which passengers from the city use to get to the airport. There is free WiFi in all areas of the airport and there are also designated smoking rooms inside.
A Business Lounge and VIP services are located at the terminal's 3rd floor, a medical center on the second floor, as well as a mother and child room that's free and open 24/7.
Terminal B only has one floor, contains the customs control and WiFi can be used at a certain fee.
Terminal D has a souvenir shop on the ground floor, airline offices and coffee bars at the 2nd floor. A medical center on the 1st floor and a mother and child room on the 2nd floor can also be found here.
The airport also has a VIP transport wing located on the northern part of the airport, used by many of Russia's politicians and heads of states. The airport is occasionally closed when VIP flights are taking off or landing.
There are two hotels within the vicinity of the airport complex. The Ekipazh Hotel, is a short walking distance from the airport terminal and it is mainly used by airline crew members. But guests are also welcome. The Aeroport Hotel, opened in 2005, is a 10-storey hotel located only 15 minutes away from the terminal building.
A direct line to Moscow is found underground, with trains provided by Aeroexpress, offering a convenient and affordable way of getting to and from the city. Travel time is only 35 minutes. The official Mosgotrans bus line also has a stop at the terminal. Passengers can also take advantage of car rental services and taxis at the airport.
