Yoshkar Ola Airport
The Yoshkar Ola Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Yoshkar Ola in the Mari El Republic of Russia. Yoshkar Ola is the capital city of the Mari El Republic, which is 800 km from the country's capital of Moscow, Russia. The airport is located a short 9 km distance from the city center of Yoshkar Ola.
The Yoshkar Ola Airport is also one of the airports that you can go to should you wish to get to the town of Sarov. Though Sarov is a closed town for being the Russian center for nuclear research, people who want to get close to the town usually take flights to nearby airports and drive from there to get to this fenced and guarded town. Government officials and other people in business who wish to get inside the city have to undergo a series of intense security inspections, leaving behind their passports and other important documents to be able to enter the town.
The airport only has one runway, which is an asphalt airstrip 2,400 meters long. It handles small aircrafts and is the base for the Yoshkar Ola Joint Aviation Group. Only one airline operates with regular scheduled flights at the airport and that's UTair Aviation, with daily flights to the Moscow Domodedovo International Airport. Recently, Tatarstan Airlines revived its flights at the airport with a destination to Samara in October of 2013.
The Yoshkar Ola Airport was established in 1958 and was originally called Pawlowski Airport. During this time, the construction of the airport was used solely for civilian aviation. Over the years, the airport underwent a series of renovations, accepted airlines and flight destinations, but eventually announced its bankruptcy. In 2012, the UTair Aviation flights were revived in April of that year, reopening the airport and offering flights for commercial and civilian use.
The Yoshkar Ola Airport is a category 2 airport, and is able to handle Tu -134, Yak – 42, and other smaller aircrafts. Today, the airport has the capacity to handle about 100 passengers per hour, and plans of expansion are being made to include a range of different destinations.
The airport has one terminal building with only one floor, and has a few facilities that cater to its passengers. Since the airport's location is close to the city, other facilities such as currency exchange and ATMs can be found in the city center. Restaurants and convenience stores can also be found outside the airport.
Medical service such as first aid care is available at the terminal, as well as provisions for mother and child should there be a delay in flight schedules. There are several pay phones inside the terminal, as well as a ticketing counter and an area where you can order a taxi and choices for car rental companies.
Security at the Yoshlar Ola Airport is heightened so getting through the airport's terminal entrance may take some time. It is highly recommended that passengers arrive at the airport at least 2hours before their scheduled flight to avoid delays.
With the airport's close proximity to the city center, getting to and from places in the city is not a problem. For private cars, free parking is offered at the airport's forecourt, with spaces for 30 cars, and guarded parking space can be found on the right side of the terminal, for certain fees.
If you arrive early in the morning, a free airport bus takes passengers to several parts of the city, starting at 5:30 am. Just look for the white bus with the name "Airport" transcribed on its body. City buses also bring passengers to and from the airport, starting at 6 in the morning, with its last trip at 9: 30 in the evening.
There are three taxi companies available in the city, of which you can call once you arrive. The airport is connected to the Mari El modern highway, making it quick and convenient to get to the city and to the airport.
