The Chelyabinsk Airport was built in 1938 due to the city's demand for increased air traffic. The city was developing into a major cultural and industrial center of the South Urals, making the need for an airport a high demand. It was built on a different location, with its current address having been moved during 1953.
The year 1962 saw the construction of a new runway and a new terminal building was built in 1974.
The airport has 2 terminal buildings – one for domestic and one for international destinations. The international terminal has a handling capacity of 150 passengers per hour and the domestic terminal is able to handle 300 per hour.
The Aerotel hotel is located in front of the arrival hall of the domestic terminal, near the Railway Station Square. It has 5 floors and is also in close proximity to the city which is only 18km away. A Duty Free shop can be found in the 2nd floor of the international sector, as well as a health center, and ticket office. There are a few cafes and places to eat at the terminals, as well as a shopping arcade for any last minute shopping needs.
WiFi is available throughout the terminals and smoking areas are also designated. VIP and Business Lounges are offered at both domestic and international terminals, with shops for gifts and souvenirs offered inside.
The airport has excellent connections with the city's public transport. A railway station is located very nearby and a luxury bus company can also be found within the airport, leaving and going every 10 minutes to meet and bring passengers to and from the airport. Car rental services and taxis are also available.
